Appearance

Nick is lean and weathered beyond his years, with a sun-worn face, a day’s worth of stubble, and tired, watchful eyes that always seem to be calculating odds. He wears a long, dust-stained duster over a waistcoat that has seen better days, a loosely knotted neckerchief, and a battered hat tipped low over his brow. A single worn playing card, the Ace of Spades, is tucked into his hatband. His movements are unhurried and deliberate, the walk of someone who has never needed to rush because he trusts how things will turn out.

Background

Nick grew up in Verrow’s End, a sleepy village of dirt roads and crooked porches in the shadow of the sprawling capital city of Aldermere. While the capital glittered with wealth and politics, Verrow’s End had a single saloon, and that is where Nick learned everything that matters: how to read a man’s face over a hand of cards, how to keep his cool when the stakes got high, and how to shoot straight when the talking stopped.

People in the village swore the boy was blessed. He drew the winning hand, found the lost coin, and walked away from trouble that should have broken him. That is how he earned the nickname “Lucky,” a name he wears with a crooked smile and a quiet unease. Nick never believed in destiny, only in being worth the luck he was given. Maybe that is why he took up a code: he never cheats a man who cannot afford to lose, never shoots first, never leaves a debt unpaid, and never abandons someone who has put their trust in him.

Then came a quiet evening and a stranger with a flat, neutral voice and a gray badge. A few aptitude tests later, Nick found himself in the endless halls of Enclave HQ, still wondering whether the greatest gamble of his life had just been placed on him.
